Cutting and Kitting Department Coordinator / Leader
We are seeking an individual that is skilled and experienced with leading the kitting and cutting processes withing our fabrication facility. As a Kitting Coordinator and Leader, you will oversee daily operations involved in cutting, shaping, and preparing steel plates, bars, and angles to meet customer specifications. This role ensures production efficiency, quality compliance, safety adherence, and team performance in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise processing activities including sawing, shearing, burning, laser-cutting, waterjet and drilling of plate, bar, and angle materials.
- Coordinate workflow, job scheduling, material orders placed through supply chain and machine utilization to meet production deadlines.
- Monitor through put and adjust resources to optimize efficiency.
- Monitor budget and schedule to flex with outsource capabilities to support budget and schedule.
- Lead, train, and develop machine operators and manufacturing staff.
- Assign daily tasks and ensure accountability for performance and output.
- Handle emergent orders while keeping current order flow moving.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching and corrective action when needed.
- Keep work areas, staging, storage, and cleanliness to 5S standards.
- Ensure all processed materials meet customer specifications and company quality standards.
- Ensure material certifications and heat numbers follow product for traceability.
- Ensure all remnants are labeled on stock and heat number is labeled for traceability.
- Interpret blueprints, work orders, and technical drawings.
- Work closely with quality assurance teams to resolve defects and implement improvements.
- Enforce OSHA and company safety policies and procedures, ensure proper use of PPE, identify and mitigate hazards.
- Oversee proper operation and basic maintenance of processing equipment (CNC machines, saws, plasma/oxy-fuel cutters, waterjet, laser cut table etc.)
- Coordinate with maintenance teams for repairs and preventive maintenance schedules.
- Keep spare parts controlled and available, keep consumables in stock to support the department.
- Monitor raw material usage and minimize waste.
- Coordinate with purchasing and inventory teams to ensure material availability.
- Track production data and maintain accurate records.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce costs, and streamline processes.
- Implement Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma principles where applicable.
Qualifications:
- 7 to 10 years fitting, precision assembly, or inspection experience within aerospace or a high-tolerance manufacturing environment.
- High school diploma or GED required, technical or associate degree preferred.
- 3 to 7+ years of experience in steel processing, fabrication, or metals manufacturing.
- 1 to 3+ years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of plate, bar, and structural steel processing methods
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Familiarity with CNC equipment and production software systems
- Solid leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
- Able to work in an industrial and manufacturing setting with exposure to heavy machinery, noise, and varying temperatures.
- Able to stand for long periods of time, able to walk, and to lift heavy materials up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with configuration control, and aerospace documentation workflows.
- OSHA safety training
- Overhead crane operations
- Forklift operation
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel and Word.
